We Survived the Summer

Posted on September 28th, 2021 by Conrad Cable

Happy Fall members!

Compared to a few weeks ago, I am really enjoying the weather! We still have to water our greens 3 times a day when it is over 80, but work is much less draining. I hope that all of you are finding some time to spend outdoors during this time in Louisiana. A cloudy, gusty day is what I live for right now.

To celebrate the beginning of Fall, we have a few new vegetables coming out this week! A new green we have never offered before, komatsuna, will be in shares this week. It is a dark green, known in the West as "Japanese spinach". A nutrient and mineral powerhouse, komatsuna has three times your daily serving of vitamin A, 1.5x the daily serving of vitamin C, and 20% of daily potassium recommendations! This is also the first week for kale and rainbow chard bundles. The bundles are bouquet style with four types of kale (curly, dino, red Russian, and scarlet kale) I love these for green smoothies, or for kale chips. Rainbow chard is one of my favorites greens. I love the buttery texture and mild flavor, plus, the colors make it a spectacular row in the garden.

The salad mix this week is arugula, golden frills mustard, rainbow chard, tatsoi, bok choy hearts, with limited lettuce. The braising greens mix is going to be mustard greens, turnip greens, kale, bok choy, komatsuna, and arugula.

I apologize for not including the hot peppers in last week's delivery. This week you can choose between the hot mix, or jalapeno peppers. There are lots of other leafy greens, and root vegetables available as well!

We are featuring a new product from Stowe Creek Farm, HONEY BEARS. Their amazing honey is now in a squeezable container with a flip lid, shaped like a bear, and y'all, I'm a little obsessed. Grits, cornmeal, eggs, and jam are all able to be swapped for any of our vegetables. Thank you for supporting other local farms! Mr. Walker has said that we might have pumpkins and winter squash next week!

Thank you all for supporting our farm. You can see more of our day to operations on our social media pages. This week, we are at the Ruston Farmers Market on Saturday, then the Flying Tiger Brewery Farmers Market on Thursday from 6-8 PM. We are releasing new flavors of jam, including some cool twists on muscadine jelly.

Cook something good this week, ya'hear?!

Best,

Conrad Cable
