CSA Week Three

Posted on April 30th, 2021 by Conrad Cable

Good afternoon everyone! I hope that you all have been enjoying the shares, and welcome to all the new members who have joined us!

It's been a great week on the farm! We had our best farmers market ever last Saturday in Ruston, and we sent out the most CSAs we ever had, which means that we harvested more vegetables last week than ever in our farm's history! I have been reflective and nostalgic all week. Five years ago we went to our first farmers market, because I grew way too much food for just my kitchen. It is with that same spirit and passion for consuming quality food that keeps me motivated to make our farm the best it can be. I sure am grateful to grow vegetables for you all.

This year has not been without it's challenges. We are now struggling with insect pressure. The bok choy, tatsoi, and mustards have been particually prone to bugs, but we are working towards natural solutions like planting extras, placing one crop in many field blocks, and using insect netting. We have ordered an organic insecticide, but have not sprayed our crops as of this moment. We need to harvest most of the bok choy, tatsoi, and mustard so I am going to automatically add those to each share this week. I hope that you keep them in your share, (they are so tasty!), but during the customization window, you can swap, or remove them.

Next week it looks like the first of our zucchini squash will be ready to harvest! It it starting to feel like summer. I did see 90 degrees on the weather for next week!

In our kitchen, we have immensely enjoyed stir fry veggies and the microgreens from Wall Greens! Lettuce season is in full swing so a big salad has been an everyday thing! We will have a good deal this week on heads of lettuce!

A BIG THANK YOU goes out to everyone who add-on extras last week! We are so proud to support other local farms!

Remember to bring your bags to the pick-ups, and DELIVERY folks please leave an ice chest out for your veggies!
