Severe Crop Damages from Large Hail Storm on Sunday

Posted on April 20th, 2020 by Noah Sanders

With the covid-19 crisis we all have a greater appreciation of the resiliency of small scale farming. But there traditional risks associated with growing crops haven't changed. On Sunday morning our community had a severe thunderstorm (possible tornado) with hail and strong winds that severely damaged the crops in our gardens. Ready-to-pick arugula, spinach, lettuce heads, and salad mix were pulverized. Onion leaves were snapped off. Sugar snap pea blooms were stripped off the vines. Freshly planted beds of chives and carrots were washed away with the deluge. Squash vines and bush beans were chewed up. And 45 young broiler chickens died from the cold of the hail while in their pasture shelter. It is amazing the damage that can happen in just a few minutes. Throughout our small community trees were down all over the place and much damage done to homes and property. But we are so grateful for all the crops that survived. Root crops like potatoes and baby carrots are should recover. Our tunnels protected our tomatoes and peppers. Some of the greens may re-grow to give a small harvest. More baby chicks are on the way. And we have more transplants ready to go into the fields. God's creation is so quick to forgive and regenerate. So, although we have enough produce to make a delivery this week, we are planning on taking off to get the farm back in order and prepare for the rest of the season. Next week we should be able to start deliveries back, though the selection might not be as diverse for a few weeks as we had planned. Thank for your support in this temporary setback and we look forward to continuing to serve you this season!
