Farm Happenings for July 19, 2021

Posted on July 14th, 2021 by Tim Vrieselaar

The order form is finally ready for you!  It's late this week because of exciting things in BC!

The blueberry harvest has started and we are getting fresh blueberries.  I don't know about you but I can't wait to get those delicious fresh blueberries from the Fraser Valley...( I do wish they could add my little sister to the back of the truck and ship her out to see me as well!!!)  It's been so long since we have been together...and when you know the truck is in her back yard...it's hard not to wish her here.

But we will just enjoy the blueberries and dream about winter trips to see our family.

The heat continues to cause it's problems.  Honestly we are doing the best we can...but it is proving hard to keep crops fresh in this heat.  Any softer fruit is not keeping very long....so best recommendation is to eat the most delicate foods first and hopefully you will get the most enjoyment out of the fruits that way.

Again...a must is your cooler with ice packs in a shady spot if possible.  The ice will melt in hours if it's in the sun...and then we end up putting your food in a warm cooler which we really do not like to do.  I suggest a frozen water bottle or two added to your cooler.  Hopefully the heat will settle out soon and we can all get back to regular growing, harvesting and delivering without problems.

The first broccolini is just coming ready...and hopefully there will be lots of broccoli following it.  It's not quite on the list this week...but within a week or two we should be ready for some fresh broccoli salads.  The first beans are just around the corner as well...and this week we hope to harvest the first potatoes.

The potatoes have us honestly very worried....we have been hearing reports of potato crops that look beautiful...but the heat has caused the potatoes to abort their fruit and some farms are reporting no potatoes in the ground.  It breaks my heart to see the crops suffering in the heat and not being able to produce the crops we look forward to.  Thankfully our white potatoes seem to be ok...less fruit than usual..but not nothing.  Our red potatoes...which are usually the first ones we harvest....have nothing on them!  There are tiny nubs where the potatoes should be....but so far...no food in the earth there!  We are praying for a break in the heat so that the crops are able to grow in a regular way.

Our report this week does not sound very encouraging...and I am really sorry for that.  But the heat is a very concerning thing when it is so hot that the crops are not even able to grow.  We need a break in the heat...and some rain...and lots of prayers for a safe growing season.  Please bear with us as we try our best to keep our crops happy and healthy.

Thanks for your support!
