Farm Happenings for September 21, 2020

Posted on September 17th, 2020 by Tim Vrieselaar

Another gorgeous week of Autumn!  I am loving the last of the warm weather and trying hard not to think too much about the winter that is sure to come.  Harvest continues....they are busy doing a big carrot harvest today.  These will get washed and bagged and will be available for most of the winter.  Speaking of winter....THERE ARE STILL FALL SHARES AVAILABLE> The season will run from November 1 to December 21. Just enough time to get your Christmas dinner table well stocked with local produce.  We will continue to offer it with home delivery in Calgary and encourage you to sign up today to keep eating healthy and local right till the end of 2020.  And we will be back at it as early as possible again in 2021 if all goes well.

There is still harvesting to be done here on the farm.  The carrots, potatoes, celery, beets, cabbage, tomatoes, and peppers are all waiting for the last of the harvest.  The gardens are starting to look empty and deserted ...but we are so thankful for our companion growers for continuing to supply us with other crops.  Crops from other growers include onions, cukes, peppers, celery, and some basil, kale, leek (coming soon).  We hope you are enjoying the variety as much as we are.  This partnership with other growers is very helpful for us as it allows us to focus better on fewer crops rather than trying to coordinate the seeding, growing, weeding, harvesting, etc of 30+ crops!!

Our cabbage that was blasted by the hail - - is looking beautiful now!  Some of the biggest heads are topping 10lb!  So if you have plans to make sourkraut ...now is the time to be thinking about that.  The big heads are available now - -so be sure to check the add-ons if you want some.

Corn on the cob is delicious right now...the first harvest of the second crop...this also was blasted with hail but still finished growing... You might notice the rows are not perfectly straight or even missing kernels in places.. This is because the kernels were just forming when the hail hit and so some of the tassels were damaged.  Did you know---every string at the top of the cob...leads to it's own kernel of corn within the cob?? Take a close look when you husk you corn this week...It is such an amazing miracle of creation!

Farmer Tim is again asking me to remind our home delivery members to put their coolers out in the morning.  The bags hardly hold all the goodies right now...and if there is no cooler out...there is nowhere to put your veggies... PLEASE REMEMBER YOUR COOLERS> Thank you!

I miss seeing all my members and we hope you are doing well.  Drop me a note and please share pictures of your harvest boxes for us to add to our social media and website.  Thanks and enjoy Autumn.
