Summer Share: Week 20

Posted on October 10th, 2020 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

It's the final summer share of the season, and fall color is at it's peak. We've shifted from planting to some final weeding tasks and field cleanup. Harvests continue - with fresh greens for this week's shares and bulk harvests for the coming months. We were happily surprised to find that our final bean planting made it through our first frosts. The yellow beans are crisp and sweet! The Brussels sprouts also have benefited from the first frosts - cold weather increases the sweetness of brassicas.

We've been enjoying the return of lettuces - with bountiful seasonal salads accompanying our dinners. Last night, we enjoyed a salad with toasted pepitas, apples, and raisins tossed in our "house dressing" of maple-mustard vinaigrette. It is so nice to have a fresh salad next to the heavy comfort food of fall.

As we enter the slower part of our year, we have the space to dream about next year's growing season. We are already perusing seed catalogs and planning for 2021. In the coming weeks, you'll be receiving communication from us about sign up for 2021, as well as an end of season survey.

Thank you for being a part of Meadowlark Community Farm! Be well, and eat your veggies.

Your Farmers,
