Summer Share: Week 15

Posted on September 5th, 2020 by Lauren and Craig Kreutzer

We sure have been enjoying this very September-like weather. While heavy harvests continue to roll in, we are working on getting the farm ready for fall. This week, we completed our final weeding of our newly established strawberries and asparagus for the 2020 season. These crops are a labor of love - strawberries won't be harvested until next year and asparagus not for another couple of years. Fall roots and greens are receiving their final weedings. We'll be wrapping up fall cover cropping this weekend and covering some crops with row cover to keep them a few degrees warmer.

The tomatoes are still bountiful this week, but we foresee them coming to an end. Next week will be our last big tomato week. We have bulk drying, paste, and heirloom tomatoes available for purchase again this week. We've filled our freezer with chopped paste tomatoes for canning later in the year and roasted heirlooms and slicers for enjoying in soups, stews, and pasta sauces. Peppers are ramping up. On the horizon - spaghetti squash and more salad mix. Microgreens will return to our shares week 17.

This week's picture is of our Friday night dinner - take and bake pizza from The Neighbors in Wonewoc. We order take and bake a couple times per month, smother it with our veggies, and serve it next to a big bowl of salad. It is a simple, semi-homemade meal that is complete comfort food after a full day of field work.
