Farm Happenings for November 3, 2022

Posted on October 31st, 2022 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 2 of the Fall CSA season!

October really came in like a lamb and out like a lion, if that's how the saying goes and we are really making up for all of that missed precipitation. On the farm we are continuing with fall clean up and cover cropping and starting on the big root vegetable harvest. While our climate is conducive to store root veggies in the ground all winter, we find that critters start to eat all of the veggies now that there are fewer food sources around. We unfortunately have lost about 400 pounds of beets to voles and rabbits, so we have started to pull those in to store in the cooler.

We also have started our big high tunnel (greenhouse) build so we can extend the season even longer. Footings were dug yesterday and we are getting ready to pour a lot of concrete to set the ground posts. Hope to get this project done before winter really sets in and we can start seeding in there in February.

Gentle reminder to vote if you haven't gotten your ballots in yet!

Veggies this week:

Last week for peppers! Depending on the weather, they might still be around next week, but this might be the last week for sweet peppers, hot peppers, and shishitos. We have offered peppers each week for the last 12 weeks, which feels like a win.

Lots of broccolini! Probably the last big peak of broccolini for the year? It will begin to taper off, depending on the weather.

Cauliflower is back. Due to a staffing/timing issue in July, we have cauliflower on the later side this fall, just in time for roasted cauliflower.

Leeks! These are the best leeks we have ever grown in my ten years of farming! Its time for potato leek soup (my preferred PSL)
