Farm Happenings for October 13, 2022

Posted on October 10th, 2022 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 20! Its our last week of the regular season! Remember, you still have time to sign up for our Fall CSA season that starts in two weeks, the week of October 24! Our crew is taking off a week from harvesting to catch up on some big projects (like building a new sheep barn!) If you have questions about the Fall CSA share, please reply to this email!

Veggies this week:

Its chicory season! We have escarole and radicchio this week! Did you know that the NW a center for chicory production in the US? Learn all about it from our friends at Chicory Week!

As lettuce season wains, we encourage you to try chicory! I firmly believe part of joining a CSA is learning to eat with the seasons. Food should not be the same in November as it it is in July, and October food in Washington should not be the same as October food in Florida. Tender, leafy salads in the winter are still very possible to still be local if we switch from eating California and Arizona grown lettuce to NW grown radicchio. And by doing so, you are helping dismantle the extractive and exploitative corporate salad machine who are exporting their valuable WATER all of the world. Too much for a weird, bitter vegetable? We hope not.

Winter Squash! While it was 80 degrees here yesterday, it's time to embrace squash. Pumpkins are not just for pie. Try roasting and stuffing a pumpkin with rice! Or try this Roasted Spaghetti Squash with lasagna like layers!

Daikon Radish season! One of our very favorite crops are these multi colored daikon radishes. Super crunchy, mildly spicy, perfect to accompany dips! Our very favorite dip is The Dip (labneh with sizzled scallions and chile), which is kinda like an even more delicious ranch?
