Farm Happenings for September 15, 2022

Posted on September 12th, 2022 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 16! Just a reminder that this is the LAST WEEK of flowers! We also have only 4 more weeks of the main season CSA!

Despite our cold and rainy spring, we did not escape Smoke Season this year. The layer of low hanging smoke makes it difficult for some plants to ripen up at the rate that we expect, so we have a small dip in available tomatoes this week. Our other fall crops are looking on track and we are hoping for another few warm weeks to keep everything growing at a rapid pace, despite coolness and darkness creeping in on the edges of the days.

We will start bulk harvesting the winter squash later this week so it can cure up before distribution! Curing will allow some of the starches to turn into sugars and result in a more delicious squash eating experience. Once the squash come in, it really starts to feel like fall! Our fall daikon radish crop is also starting to size up (see picture.)

Veg this week:

Brussel Sprouts TOPS- These are the tops of the sprouts plants- use like kale or collards, a preview of sprout season! We need to cut these off to encourage the plants to make uniform sprouts and they are too delicious to waste!

Elephant garlic- super mild, big cloves, great for roasting!

Peppers- starting to hit peak pepper! Seeing lots of color now in the plants.

Stir Fry Mix is back! Cook or eat raw for a heartier, spicier salad experience.

We are offering 1 pound basil bunches again if you want to make some pesto for the freezer.
