Farm Happenings for July 14, 2022

Posted on July 11th, 2022 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 7! We are finally rolling into summer! Lots of irrigating and planting winter crops happening this week. We are pulling out the rest of the garlic this week, including most of our braiding garlic! Due to the rainy spring, the garlic field is weedier then I would like to admit, but the garlic itself looks pretty good, despite it all.

Veggies this week:

Last two weeks for Napa Cabbage until the fall! It's prime slaw season.

Full on Summer Squash season! I really love eating summer squash (and really don't tire of it) and love cooking it until jammy (like this Ali Slagle NYT recipe) and using it on pasta or as a layer in quesadillas.

Radicchio and Frisee are finally back! These are my favorite salad greens and appreciate that slightly bitter flavor.

Last call for garlic scapes and peas! Last week for spinach for a bit!

Crew Introductions:

Andrea Hatsukami, she/her
Hometown: Mercer Island, WA
First year farming on a veggie farm, two years on a cattle ranch in Northern California.
Favorite veggie: Garlic is the winner. If a recipe calls for two cloves, I'll add six. I love harvesting scapes, and I especially enjoy sautéing them with lemon, butter, herbs, and some pasta--served up under a pile of cheese, of course.
Why I like farming: I really enjoy harvesting and delivering produce. Of course it is extra satisfying after nurturing the little seedlings, building their beds, weeding and tending to them, etc. After all that work, harvest days feel like closure. Seeing the plant's final product gets me excited about putting the next round of sprouts in the ground.
Guilty pleasure: Any Zelda game. I don't play video games that often anymore, but once in a blue moon I'll suddenly regain my childhood stamina and stay up 20+ hours playing.
Andrea also volunteers at Long Haul Kitchen, the mutual aid kitchen where we donate much of our surplus veg to! Help us help them out by adding a donation to your order this week.
