Farm Happenings for June 30, 2022

Posted on June 26th, 2022 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 5! It went from 50 degrees and raining to 90 degrees and very sunny from last weekend to this weekend. Plants don't love such a big temperature swing, so we having been working hard all weekend to keep things well irrigated, as well as doing a big seeding for fall and winter crops. Some of the spring crops we have been enjoying (like onions, scallions, sprouting broccoli, etc.) were seeded around this time last year, believe it or not! Some crops are definitely on the way out, like green garlic, bok choi, and spinach, but lots of new crops are taking their place, like cabbage, squash, and basil.

Another note: We have been donating a lot of surplus produce to The Long Haul Kitchen, a mutual aid group serving the unhoused folks in the Sodo and Georgetown neighborhoods of Seattle. I have added a donation item as an extra item within our inventory, if you are so inclined to help us help them! They cook and serve about 120 meals each week and distribute them along with harm reduction supplies and other items like socks and bottled water. Thank you!

Crew Introductions

Today, I will be introducing myself!

Emily Tzeng, she/hers
Hometown:Rising Sun, MD (the eastern shore of Maryland)
Number of years farming: 10 years here in the PNW
Fav veggie: Cabbage! It is always reliable, stores so well, and is the basis of many ferments.
What I love about farming: I love experiencing all of the seasons while farming. Some seasons are big, like "rainy season", but others are tiny, like that one really nice and dry week in February that tricks you into thinking spring is here or the week that the black locust trees are blooming and the air smells like fruit soda.
Guilty pleasure- reality tv; currently watching the show Below Deck (and its many iterations) and it might be the perfect reality workplace/strangers living together tv show. Will happily discuss this over espresso martinis (iykyk.)
