Farm Happenings for July 8, 2021: Sum Sum Summer Squash

Posted on July 6th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Happy July and hope everyone had a lovely long weekend. Internet has finally been restored to our farm, so we are grateful for that; once again, sorry for the late email this week. We also had some great volunteers come out and help with garlic harvest this weekend. Thank you! Even more garlic is coming out of the field this week so if you are interested in coming to help this week or weekend, let me know! A lot of the work can be done sitting in the shade.

We spent a lot of last week recovering from the HeatDome and assessing any damage. We lost some successions of radishes, turnips, and lettuce so we will be a little light on those things in the next month or so. We also had to remove the protective fabric covering on some crops that we use for pest exclusion so they would not fry in the heat. As a result, we have more cosmetic pest damage than usual in these crops and we hope you understand and accept this Imperfect Produce.

Its also definitely officially summertime when we start harvesting summer squash (see image) at least every other day! I love eating zucchini and summer squash, so I am not complaining. We make this Summer Squash Pasta often this time of year. If you don't eat pasta, the squash can also become the "pasta" in the form of zoodles or make zucchini ribbons yourself with a peeler.

TACOMA PICK UP MEMBERS:

Our fantastic pick up partner Field Bar and Bottle Shop is doing some remodeling for the month of July. As a result, we will shift our pick up to Gather Juice Bar next door for the month of July, starting July 16.  Pick up hours will be 1-5pm for July 16, 23, 30.

This week July 9, pick up will be at Field from 4-6pm. If this does not work for you, please let me know. You can always switch to our Puyallup location if that works better for you.

Sorry for this change up; we did not anticipate this when we set up this pick up last winter.
