Farm Happenings for November 17, 2020

Posted on November 16th, 2020 by Emily Tzeng

Through the many challenges of 2020, we have finally made it to the final week of our CSA program! Thanks for joining us for 27 weeks of locally grown food!

Some veggies I wanted to give a shout out to:

Storage kohlrabi aka "coconut of the north." These giant kohlrabi are super sweet, make delicious slaw, and great in ferments. Dishing Up the Dirt has a great collection of kohlrabi recipes.

Stir fry Mix- A mix of Asian Greens and hearty greens that are perfect for an easy stir fry! Just give them a rinse/spin dry/ and rough chop!

Watermelon Radishes- We could all use some hot pink food these days. These are great on a cheese platter, sliced on a salad, pickled for banh mi sandwiches...

Gilfeather turnips- The state vegetable of Vermont! This is the first year of growing these rutabaga/turnip hybrids for us. Mix with potatoes for a mash, cube and roast with cumin and paprika, or (our fav) use in a Japanese style curry (more points if you use the "vermont" brand of Japanese curry blocks.)

Up next-

Please look for our end of season survey! This will really help us with planning the next season. What veggies you liked/wanted more of/did not care for/add on items you would like to see, etc. We will continue to use HARVIE as our CSA platform.

Since this is the last week, we have listed a lot of extra inventory for your upcoming Thanksgiving meals; while this holiday season will be different, I hope we can all enjoy some delicious food! Most of the roots and hearty greens will store easily for weeks if they are kept in the right conditions. While I personally do not support the history of this holiday, I do believe in reflecting on what I am grateful for. If you haven't watched the film Gather, this is a great week to do so!

We have had some really exciting changes at the farm this week! After 3.5 years, we are finally beginning some major farm infrastructure projects! Our construction driveway is being installed and ground work for our barn is finally happening this week! We experienced a lot of permitting delays due to Covid, so we are happy to begin this. By the beginning of the next CSA season, we should have a brand new barn to host pick ups, a much improved wash/pack shed, and a much nicer place to house all of our equipment.

If you are interested in reserving a whole or half lamb for your freezer this year, please do so soon! More info and deposits can be place here. A half lamb is pretty compact once it is cut up and will fit in a beer box. We also have a half lamb that we would like to donate to a family in need. If you would like to donate to help cover the butchering fees or donate to cover another half lamb, please email me! All of our sheep are harvested in a halal manner.

Thanks for all of your support this year! Please stay safe and healthy
