Farm Happenings for September 22, 2020

Posted on September 20th, 2020 by Emily Tzeng

The smoke has cleared and it seems like fall has started to settle in! We are nearing the end of summer crops, especially since many of the fruiting crops didn't love the smokey week without much sun. Enjoy them while you can! We have maybe 1-2 weeks left for eggplant, 2-3 weeks left for tomatoes, and 3-4 weeks left for peppers. Cukes and squash will be picked until we have a frost, something that is possible anytime in the next few weeks.

We did bring in lots of winter squash last week and most are curing in the greenhouse. We cure the squash to allow for the sugars to really develop and result in the best flavor. Also new this week are leeks and lots of new types of greens! We also are happy to offer Brussels sprout tops; we need to cut the tops off of the sprout plants to make sure the actual sprouts size up. The tops are a great bonus veggie and can be cooked like collards or kale.

Just a reminder that while the Flower CSA has ended, you can order bouquets a la cart! Eggs are also available.

Reminder for members who do not work at the Pierce County Offices, our pick up window is Tuesday 1-2pm at the Tacoma Mall Plaza parking lot. Thanks!
