Farm Happenings for September 17, 2020

Posted on September 14th, 2020 by Emily Tzeng

What a wild and smokey week at the farm! Here, we were actually quite close to the Sumner Grade Fire, which is burning just up the hill from the farm. We were adjacent to the Zone 3 evacuation zone for a couple of days and spent a couple days to prepare the farm in case we needed to leave. Luckily, it looks like that fire is contained now, thanks to the hard work of many first responders. Now, like most of the state, we are working in a thick haze of smoke. We are extremely privileged to be able to limit our hours outside and have received a generous donation of kn95s for our crew. Other farmworkers, many of which are immigrants and people of color, do not have such privileges and must work through these hazardous conditions. Please follow United Farm Workers on Instagram to see the faces of those who are backs and hands of our food system.

Reminders:

This is the last week for our Flower CSA! We will list bouquets a la cart for the next few weeks when they are available.

You can also continue to add eggs and bread to your shares.

Donations:

Other farms and farmworkers are not as lucky and we are heartbroken for all of our farming friends all over the west coast who have had to evacuate or have lost so much in these fires. If you are able, please join us in donating to organizations like:

Unete- Oregon farmworker assistance

Portland CSA- assisting small farms (like ours!) in Oregon to recover from wildfire

Our Family Farms- donations for farmworker housing in southern oregon
