Farm Happenings for August 18, 2020

Posted on August 17th, 2020 by Emily Tzeng

It took a lot of irrigation, but it looks like every thing has survived our nearly 100 degree heat this weekend! We hope everyone is doing well and enjoying all of the late summer produce. Just a note that you can order eggs to add on to your share this week!

This week we are starting to seed our fall and winter cover crops. About 1/3 of our acreage is not in use every year to accommodate our cover crop program. We seed a mixture of grains and legumes that feed the soil in preparation for our veggie crops. Our fall and winter cover crops are especially important as they cover the soil over the wet months and protect it from erosion and cover crops will scavenge any available fertility in the soil and hold on to it instead of letting it leach out into the river over the winter. The image included in this note shows a field with crimson clover that was sown into our fall/winter brassica field about this time last year!

A reminder to all members who do not work at Pierce County Offices: our pick up is Tuesday 1-2pm at the Tacoma Mall Plaza. Please let me know if you will not be able to make this time frame.

Bread share members: Our baker is on vacation this week; we will hold all bread shares this week for you and you will not be charged.
