Farm Happenings for July 7, 2020

Posted on July 6th, 2020 by Emily Tzeng

Hello! Welcome to July!

Flower Shares! Please be sure to pick up your bouquet if you have ordered one. If you are not a flower share member, we will also have a la carte bouquets available. You can add these in the "extras" part of your order.

One of the ephemeral spring veggies we have available this week is celtuce, or Chinese stem lettuce. Imagine a tasty combination of water chestnuts and romaine! To prepare this veggie, Peel the stalk until it is somewhat translucent, slice into coins, and stir fry with anything else you would like. We cook it with garlic, scallions, and mushrooms. It should still be a little crunchy when done. For more about this veggie, check out this page from Stone Barns.

We also have some nice looking cauliflower ready this week and next! Spring cauliflower always a very short season as the plants need a lot of days  but not a lot of heat! This is a great preview for our main plantings that will be ready in September-December.

We are looking forward to a warm week ahead to help with tomato ripening! Lots of fruits on the vines are patiently awaiting some warm weather for them to turn. We also just completed most of our winter veggie seeding this week and started garlic harvest. This is probably the last week of the year for truly fresh garlic! We will dig, clean, sort, bundle, and hang about 3000 heads of garlic this week! We hope that its enough garlic for everyone for the rest of the year.
