Farm Happenings for October 20, 2021

Above is a pic of Sam enjoying beet beauty. One of the farm-workers, Sophie, happens to take great photos.

We are reveling in the fall abundance, though certainly wishing for a dry-out.

You may notice lots of summer fruits available for swap/purchase. I don't have enough to inventory to add them to the main shares, but tried to make some fun stuff available to get in your shares if you wish.

NEW THIS WEEK! Prairie Fruits Farm and Creamery is adding their Artisan Cottage Cheese to the store. It's made with cow milk from Rocky Road Dairy: Certified Organic, grass fed, Brown Swiss Cows. This cottage cheese is rich and creamy. We love it spread on hearty toast, perhaps with some sliced red pepper.

For those of you who haven't already signed up, we have Fall Shares Available! Feel free to add a mushroom share, it's always mushroom season.

A word about carrots. We at Blue Moon like our carrots sweet, which is why we seed them in July. We are able to get a few frosts on the full sized carrots if we seed in July. Frosts and freezes signal the plants to convert their starches to sugars, nature's anti-freeze. That's why many crops taste sweeter in the fall, they've been hit with some frosts. It's also why we don't grow summer carrots, because we like them sweet. We never know when frosts are going to come, and this year I have no frosts in sight. That could change in a week or two, but the forecast continues to look warm. We will definitely have carrots, just can't say exactly when.
