Farm Happenings for November 6, 2019

Posted on October 31st, 2019 by Chris Duke

Hello everyone - it's almost time for your first winter delivery!

It's been a chilly week here at Great Oak Farm getting all the crops tucked in for the deep freeze headed our way, but we managed to keep our fingers (mostly) warm and get the farm put to bed.   I am so very grateful for the hardworking and hard laughing crew of Dane, Eric, and Ashley who have had some long days this last week helping get ready for winter.  Farming is typically some combination of being hot, cold, wet, or dirty, and I think we have been all of these but hot for the last week!  Now that we're wrapping up the growing season outside,  the kitchen is my favorite place to be when the cold weather arrives - I am looking forward to some great cooking this winter!

For the last few days, we have had a few interesting guests "hanging out" at the farm as we worked - well, ABOVE the farm to be precise.  Excel Energy is upgrading their large overhead power lines (which run through one of our fields) with additional  supports that will help the lines shed ice, snow, and wind more effectively.  To allow workers to reach the lines, a bright orange helicopter has been flying along the lines dangling 2 workers in a basket!  The workers can then apply the supports to the lines from the air.  It has been quite an interesting operation to  watch - and I thought my hands were cold down here on the ground!

As this is our first delivery using the new Harvie platform, you will be now able to choose some additional items to add to your boxes.  Be sure to check out all the options - we are really excited to get this kind of choice integrated into the CSA boxes!  Melissa's wreaths will be available this month as well as next month while supplies last, and I have to say are gorgeous!  As always, if you have any questions feel free to drop me an email.

Here's to warm bellies and a hearty winter!

Yours in community,
