Farm Happenings for October 31, 2018

Posted on October 29th, 2018 by Ben Saunders

With the warm days we've been having lately it's hard to believe that this is the end of October!  The weather has been enjoyable to work in as I can remember harvesting in Winter gear and rinsing produce off in the greenhouse to stay warm.  We have had to open up the High Tunnel more often though this time of year because it's been getting pretty warm in there.

This is the second to last week of the Fall Share so please start gathering up any empty share boxes you have laying around and bring them back to the drop sites.  We do reuse these boxes so it's nice to have them returned as they cost around $1.65 apiece.

This beautiful weather has us itching to start planting garlic and hope to begin this final planting next week.  We love experimenting at the Farm and this season we are trying out something new with this planting.  Typically we would cover them with straw after planting to keep them a bit warmer over winter and to prevent them from heaving out of the ground during the freeze/thaw cycles.  This season we are going to try using a heavy weight row cover/frost blanket as a "mulch".  The intial cost is similar to a load of straw but, unlike straw, we should get 3 or 4 years use out of it!
