Well, the Farm got nipped by a little frost on Friday and Sunday of last week.  The average/normal first frost date for us here in Central Iowa is typically around October 15th.  Like we've all experienced, there has been nothing really average and/or normal about this year : ). We were able... read more »

What a change in weather we've been having.  It went from 90 degrees one day to upper 50's the next day.  Watch your plants outdoors on Friday night and Sunday night as it looks like we could have some frosts! With the chilly nights we had the different types of basil are done for this season... read more »

Happy First Day of Fall!  The temperature doesn't necessary feel like Fall but the leaves are starting to change color to signify Fall is here.  Many apologies for sending out this email late but it has been a busy week for us as we are trying to get jobs done before the cooler weather arrives. Farm Happenings for September 16, 2020

Well, those rains we had sure did feel food!  We got somewhere between 3-4 inches and the ground sure did need it!  One downside is it caused some of the full size tomatoes to crack (they become so full of water they burst open) but fortunately it wasn't that many that cracked! This week is... read more »

Farm Happenings for September 9, 2020

What a change in the weather it looks like we're going to have this week compared to last week.  The predicted rains coming up will be most welcome as there are big cracks in the farm ground from being so dry out here!  I guess one positive is that we aren't farming in Colorado though! ... read more »

Hard to believe that this morning (8/31) we all were wearing hooded sweatshirts considering the temperatures all last week!  This has definitely been the craziest season I've ever experienced weather-wise. Your crops were getting a little stressed out from the heat (meaning not maturing, dropping... read more »

Farm Happenings for August 26, 2020

After the last couple of weeks I thought the "heat of the summer" was over with.  Looks like I was wrong as this week looks to be a very hot one!  We are still working to put the farm back together from the Derecho as well as keep up with typical field work.  I have a rule that once the... read more »

Farm Happenings for August 19, 2020

I'm happy to report that it seems like the crops are bouncing back better than I thought they would after the Derecho!  We did lose most of our newly direct seeded crops (greens, turnips, beets, etc.) but we will replant them.  The peppers looked like they suffered the worst as most plants... read more »
