Week 2

Posted on May 20th, 2023 by Ford Waterstrat

Wow! So much to celebrate-You brought some of the regions best food to your family this past week. Congratulations. We're excited too- We're able to look in the fields and see the abundance of good things to come. We anticipate broccoli being ready to harvest for your 3rd week, hopefully some radishes and turnips, maybe some green onions too. Our goal is that each week your share will have more variety to choose from. Don't forget to check out the examples of past year's shares or our seasonal offering guide for a good idea of what's coming.

In this picture taken February 18th- you can see the first cabbage and broccoli that were seeded the first week of February (to be harvest late May-Early June)- How many months is that from seeding to harvest for your shares? That's right it takes _____months to get the first of those items to your table. And that's when everything goes well :) There are frost hardy crops and frost sensitive crops. Frost hardy crops are your vegetables that you will receive in early spring. Frost sensitive crops like tomatoes, peppers, squash, melons, green beans and "summer favorites" can be killed by the last frosty morning that typically happens the 2nd week of May. On average it takes 70 days for a tomato plant that gets planted into the field May 15th to produce its first crop. In an effort to try and get you summer favorites a little earlier we do grow some cherry tomatoes in "high tunnels" that protect the tender plants from those frosty mornings.

Your participation in a weekly share from Sustainable Harvest Farm shows that you want to feed your family food that brings goodness  into the world. As you're well aware, there are farming practices that are detrimental to our world's ecosystem and  population in many different ways. I would like to do a better job explaining these different aspects-- but I better make sure I'm out there tending to your food and my team here.

Sincere thanks

Ford
PS- You have to try this great recipe for garlic scape pesto! You won't ever want to make regular pesto again- You can even freeze it
