Week 5

Do you know why so many vegetables are raised in locations with very little rain? I mean--- that just sounds silly right? Crops need rain to survive- so why would you raise them in places with very little rain? Vegetable crops being grown in the deserts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico???  Well- rain actually throws many good plans to pieces. Many vegetable farmers will tell you that less rain is actually much better for growing, harvesting, and caring for the crops. We're very fortunate and have many wonderful rivers and streams that we're able to pump water from. It can be quite complex managing the irrigation of all of the different crops- and requires expensive pumps and irrigation tubing to manage it all- but at SHF we'd still prefer dry weather over wet weather. We have to set up the irrigaition systems whether or not its rains- so we'd definitely prefer it not to rain!

Anyway- The crops are looking good. I imagine we will start harvesting squash and zuchinni in 1.5-2 weeks and might even be able to sneak in some early gourment potatoes before too much longer-

Thanks for letting us be your farm family,
