Can you Believe it- We're not even half way thru your farm share season? Strawberries seem like a foggy memory! However now is the time to begin getting ducks in a row to plant strawberries for the 2020 season. Here are a smattering of thoughts that go into preparing for a crop like strawberries. Strawberries are unique because it is one of the only plants that we purchase and we have to predict so many things so far in advance.

  • How may plants do I grow for to make sure I have enough for 2020?
  • Which field is least likely to have deer damage that I haven't already planted strawberries in the last 3 years?
  • Which field is easiest to irrigate in early spring? Strawberries require a lot of soil moisture
  • Which field is least likely to be impacted by an early frost?
  • Which field is most fertile and best suited to strawberries.
  • Should I even grow strawberries? We barely break even every year on them...but our Farm Share members sure love them.
  • Should I grow a lot extra in case we do have problems?
    • If I do that my expenses go up
  • Which company has the best certified organic plants available and the most reasonable price?
    • there are only a handful of companies that sell certified organic strawberry plants.
  • The list goes on and on!

So what's it like having a diversity of vegetables for farm share members for 22 weeks? That's 5.5 months! Nearly half the year you let us be your farmers. This year has been a struggle. More than 40 different types of vegetables are grown just for you.

Please Keep us in your thoughts! Ford
