Mid Season Reminders and How is it Week 8 Already??

Posted on August 23rd, 2021 by Jenny Berkenbosch

Dear Farm Share members,

Please take a few minutes to read these important reminders:

  • We'd like to remind you to pick up your shares within the allotted hours for your location. Our hosts provide us space for free as a community service, so please reciprocate the goodwill by showing up on time.
  • If someone picks up your share in your stead, please let them know the guidelines (like bringing a bag).

Thank you for helping us continue to operate smoothly when getting these boxes out to you! It definitely takes a team!

Farm news

Cooler weather means a bit of a slow down for heat loving zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes and beans. We have had a good run with those crops and will continue to have beans until we have a frost. You'll notice a gradual shift in what we are bringing to your shares as the season turns. For instance, this week we are featuring fava beans, leeks and the first sweet corn!

We have had a few crops not work out as well as we'd hoped, due mainly to the excessively dry weather this summer. It seems that regardless of how much irrigating one does, plants really prefer a good rain.  Some of these are broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and celery. It is always difficult to let go of a crop that doesn't work. We have done quite a bit of soil-testing this year, hoping that if there are ways that we can support our crops through soil amendments, we can act on good information for next year.

May you eat tastily this week!

Warmly,

Jenny and James
