Trust the Plan

Posted on July 8th, 2020 by Danielle *Allen

Sticking to our plan is what keeps us afloat this time of year. There is a precise rhythm and timing to everything we do as the growing season unfolds. We spend spend about five weeks crafting our crop plan every winter so we can keep it all straight. We're so busy harvesting and weeding in July (hoeing brussels sprouts in this photo), that if we didn't have our crop plan to rely on, we could easily forget what to plant next. There are times when we improvise, but for the most part we stick to the plan, and that's what keeps this whole thing humming along. For example, this week we're scheduled to seed our fall carrots. Whose thinking about fall right now? We're just getting into the swing of summer. But we've tried seeding fall carrots at all different times over our 20 years doing this work and we've found that seeding carrots during the first week of July is really critical. This is the sweet spot for size and flavor of our fall carrots. Trust the plan.
