Week 3 of our Seasonal Veggie Box Program

Posted on June 28th, 2021 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Happy Monday, everyone!

Well, this is quite the heat wave. Hope you're all managing to find enough moments in the day to cool off. Or maybe you're the lucky owner of a pool!

We are planning to attend this week's Friday market, from 9-2pm on July 2nd. So all should remain the same for the Friday box pick-ups! It will still be hot, however, so if you're able to get there as early as you can, that will be ideal.

Skipping the Line at the Farmers' Market: just wanted to mention to market pick-ups that we definitely want you to skip the line, if there is one! If you're there to pick up your share, please do flag one of us down. I don't want you to have to wait in line for your box. So do let us know and we can grab it for you right away!

On to the veggies! We have lots of new goodies popping out of the ground, like zucchini, beet bunches, kohlrabi, fennel, and carrots! LOTS of carrots for the next couple weeks. We have also added yet another amazing local product to the EXTRAS page. We live about 2.5 kms down the road from Fraserbench Farm, a small farm operated by Lynda and Charlie. They have a lovely orchard from which they source naturally-grown (fully no-spray) apples to make traditional apple cider vinegar. They are masters in their craft and their ACV is delicious. There is more info on their process here.

We are also still carrying Alexandria Springs Farm eggs and Hanceville Cattle Co. products in the extras page. If you get zucchini in your share this week (and you probably will!), and it is a different colour or shape than usual, they are all just different types of zucchini/summer squash! You can use them the same way. The green round ones, for example, are a French heirloom zucchini called Ronde de Nice. And the light green, ribbed types are another heirloom called Romanesco. They have a nutty flavour and less water in them than classic green zukes, so are great for noodling!

A quick reminder: if there are any items you really don't love, please do head on over to your Preferences menu in your Harvie account and adjust your rating: that way, it will never or seldom go in your shares! We want to make sure you're never having to throw anything out.

Thanks, everyone. As always, please do let me know any questions  at all!

Your farmer,

- Brianna
