Prepping for the Heat!

Posted on June 24th, 2021 by Brianna van de Wijngaard

Happy Thursday, everyone!

Well, I'm sure I'm not the first person to talk about how hot it's supposed to be next week :P But holy man, seeing 40C in the forecast is something we don't see often! We have prepped as much as we can here, adding shade cloth to our most exposed beds of greens, and will water for 15 mins every hour when it's that hot. But that's all you can do. Temps that high can be stressful for many crops but hoping the added moisture will help.

As such, we have made some changes for next week, folks: we will NOT be attending the Tuesday evening market. With that heat, it will just not be good for veggies. So, Mint & Lime had kindly offered to host all WL farmers' market pickups at their location on Tuesday! (big thanks to them :) So if you are a M&L pickup OR a WL farmers' market pickup, please grab your shares at Mint&Lime any time between 12:30-5pm on Tuesday, June 29th. Home deliveries will be the same.

On to next week's veggies! We have lots of new goodies popping out of the ground, like zucchini, beet bunches, kohlrabi, and carrots! LOTS of carrots for the next couple weeks. We have also added yet another amazing local product to the EXTRAS page. We live about 2.5 kms down the road from Fraserbench Farm, a small farm operated by Lynda and Charlie. They have a lovely orchard from which they source naturally-grown (fully no-spray) apples to make traditional apple cider vinegar. They are masters in their craft and their ACV is delicious. There is more info on their process here.

We are also still carrying Alexandria Springs Farm eggs and Hanceville Cattle Co. products in the extras page.

A quick reminder: if there are any items you really don't love, please do head on over to your Preferences menu in your Harvie account and adjust your rating: that way, it will never or seldom go in your shares! We want to make sure you're never having to throw anything out.

Thanks, everyone. As always, please do let me know any questions  at all!

Your farmer,

- Brianna
