Week #8: Weather and Farming...a battle for the ages!

Posted on July 27th, 2018 by Robyn Calvey

***Soon to come veggies: more sweet corn, cherry tomatoes, carrots, dill, cabbage, green beans, beets, roma tomatoes, slicing tomatoes, colored peppers, hot peppers***

We finally got some rain which we are thankful for...however, the damage was already done.  We lost a chard planting, green beans curled before sizing up, zucchini aborted flowers due to heat stress and overall production is down.  We did irrigate (constantly!) during the drought days but we can only irrigate so much.  With only 1.25 inches of rain in 8 weeks, crop yields are down for the season.  The cool temps we are experiencing now are great for working but hard on ripening crops (tomatoes and peppers).  But, have no fear...we will still have great produce for you in the remaining weeks of the season.

This week we are purchasing in zucchini and cucumbers (as needed) to supplement our low yields from other local farms that we trust (Springdale Farm and Olden Organics).  We are also buying in sweet corn from Hoekstra's Sweet Corn in Waupun.  It is not certified organic but it is from non-GMO seed.  We plan to supply you with corn for a few weeks.

On a positive note, the fall crops are loving this cool down and looking happy these days with the rain.  The fall carrots are just peeking through the soil and next week we sow the first of the fall spinach and peas.  Hard to believe that fall is right around the corner.
