Quarter of a Season Update

Posted on July 23rd, 2019 by Robyn Calvey

Well well well...it's already the end of July which means the season is a quarter past!  You are probably already seeing the summer changes in our veggie offerings.  Out with the peas and in with the beans.  Out with the radishes and in with the cucumbers.  Soon, very soon, the peppers and tomatoes will start to make an appearance.  We are just patiently waiting for them to ripen up.

Our video this week is a look around the farm fields.  We have over 7 acres planted at the farm at any given time.  When one crop is finished, another one is planted.  We rarely plant something once, with the exception of tomatoes, parsnips, rutabaga, onions and garlic.  Most crops are planted MANY times to ensure that you have a nice variety of items week after week.  There are 5 carrot plantings in a season, 6 broccoli plantings, 3 cucumber, 2 zucchini, 3 bean, 3 beet, 3 cilantro, and at least 14 lettuce plantings!  So yes, we are always planting.  Next week marks the end of the greenhouse planting schedule but there are a few weeks remaining on the direct field seeding schedule (fall spinach gets planted soon!).

So enjoy July while it's here...it will be snowing again soon enough!

Happy plane watching!
