The Busiest Week of the Summer!!!!

Posted on September 22nd, 2019 by Tim Vrieselaar

This week has been a wild and crazy ride!  We have had our faithful Chantal out sick with mono the whole week and that leaves a lot of things for us to get done on top of all our regular tasks.  But we made it through....even though we are pretty tired by Saturday night.  We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her being back a few hours a day to try to get the harvest done for this year.

Farmer Tim had to make all the deliveries this week - - which is very tiring because he is admittedly not a trucker!  The driving time is often when you feel that a nap would sure feel good - but the road is not the time for that.  I am always thankful when I see the lights pull in the yard each night.  And speaking of the truck - our new quick fix topper is working just great - it's kept a few loads of veggies dry, warm and snug all the way to Calgary and back!

carrots

Today we dug the first of the carrots - they are a bit behind this year - but mostly they just stay safe in the ground and do their growing while we frantically harvest all the more perishable crops.  Farmer Tim was happy to snag a Flail mower on an auction this week - he's got it assembled and hooked up and has taken it for the first try already.  This allows us to basically mow the top of the crops off and then with the potato digger behind the tractor we can to 2 jobs at once.  It's working great for the carrots and the onions so far.

In our busy week - Leah enjoyed a day off and stayed home to help.  She carried crates of corn while Nathan took some very important phone calls on his cell phone case!! They sure learn alot by watching their big brothers and sisters!!

And Nathan and Leah were both super proud of their giant beets.

Fall has certainly arrived.  The weather is cooler and we have been sitting close to frost a few times already.  This morning there was a touch of frost - but it looks like things are still ok.  For now - the biggest job on the agenda for this week will be to get the squash all safely indoors - before the rain/snow they are talking about for the end of the week.  Squash harvest is the kids favorite job so I am sure we will have many willing helpers!

And on that note - the late fall share will be starting in a few short weeks (right after Thanksgiving).  If you have not registered and still want to join us for fresh veggies until mid December  - please get the registrations in as soon as possible.  With baby coming in a few weeks also - we hope to try this next season as home delivery.  At present we are still planning to attend the Hillhurst market - but all other locations will be done on a long day of driving around Calgary to deliver the veggies to your door. (these plans are all dependent on how many more signups we get in the next week....  if we have enough members signed up for a location we will still consider offering it - but otherwise it's cheaper to drive around to deliver than to spend many hours at all the locations each week)

More details on that will be coming next week in a separate email....stay tuned.

We hope you are enjoying the bounty of the season as much as we are....fall is a time of overflowing gardens and we are thankful to be able to share it with you!
