Farm Happenings for May 24, 2021

Posted on May 14th, 2021 by Tim Vrieselaar

It's been an action packed week here on the farm.

The greenhouse was getting pretty full...so the first plants went out to harden off - they will be planted in 2 weeks.  Each time we take plants out...we seed more to take their place.  It's has been lots of fun watching the plants grow day by day.  The kids love helping in the greenhouse and they are proud as punch to get to carry the trays of plants.  And Abigail found some new little friends in the greenhouse also...she is all farm girl - thrilled by worms!

This week was a great week of school at home.  The kids got all their work done in the mornings and were able to help on the farm in the afternoons and still have lots of time to play.  And the weather was so beautiful. We checked lots of clean up jobs off the list and even an afternoon of playing in the sprinklers!! It is hard to get them inside at night...but they sure sleep good once we get them into bed!

Aaron got the carrots seeded today...so in a few days we hope to torch the weeds in the carrots before they pop out....and then it's weeding for the rest of the season.  Aaron is the straightest tractor driver....and so he is the only one that gets to seed the carrots.  Since we weed with the cultivator during the growing season....if the rows are not straight....we end up pulling out carrots instead of weeds...and no one wants that to happen!

There is a slight problem in our deliveries for the next few weeks....the delicious lettuce that we have been enjoying from Inspired Greens has had a problem with production and so we are having a hard time getting the lettuce.  We will continue to try our best to get the lettuce in....and wait patiently for our own lettuce to get transplanted and growing.

The pivot has made it's first track of the field for the year...and should be watering the gardens early next week.  The strawberries are starting to come along nicely...from a boring little bundle of roots to a nice green plant and before too long it will have flowers and then fruit!

Hope you are all enjoying the weeks at home with your children.  Do yourself a favor...take time for the fun times.  Don't stress too much about the homework...and take time to enjoy each others company.  Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
