Farm Happenings for May 17, 2021

Posted on May 7th, 2021 by Tim Vrieselaar

Hello again.  It's been a week of seeding and watering here on the farm.  It amazes me how fast the greenhouse is filling up and I know...about the time it's full....it will all be sent outside to grow for the summer!  Seeded up and growing already are cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, beans, peas, corn, cukes, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes, strawberries, leek, celery, onions....I think that's about all of it so far.

Next week we will seed up the squash and then we also hope to start in the fields with the carrots also.  We start a bit later in the garden than the average home gardener....but there is a reason.  If we till the soil up and leave it for a week...it gives the weeds time to germinate.  Then we seed in the weeds....which tills them up at the same time.  Then we wait a few more days...and just before the carrots pop out of the ground we torch the whole bed to kill all the weeds fast and easy.  This allows us to have a "mostly clean" bed for the carrots to get started in.  And it helps us to get a head start on weeding and hopefully keep ahead of the weeds so that we get a good harvest at the end of the year.

Believe me...when you don't spray your weeds...it is a lot of work to keep them at bay all year long!!  But a few good tools and keeping the weeds down when they are small is the only way that it will ever work.

I know that weeding season is coming close...but we have lots of helping hands on that farm and it's fun when you all work together.

And speaking of all being together....We want to wish you all strength and courage for the next few weeks when our kiddos are home once again. I know it is not easy!!! It is a huge job that we are once again asked to do.  Personally....I love having the kids home...but I do not enjoy trying to be their teacher.  It is super hard teaching 6 kids...keeping the house clean...meals made...snacks prepped...laundry done...chickens fed...greenhouse watered...dogs trained....yup It's going to be a wild and crazy few weeks around here!!
