Farm Happenings for August 4, 2022

Posted on August 1st, 2022 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to Week 10! The farm survived the heat wave last week, thanks to the crew for starting at 5:30 each day so we could be out of the field by 2pm and thanks to the irrigation pump for working overtime to keep everything hydrated! While the heat is hard on us humans, it was amazing to see the plants grow as the leaves stretch out to receive all that light. We planted melons late (plus they got wrecked by wireworm) but the survivors grew a couple of feet and started setting fruit over the last week!

While we work really hard during the heat, we are privileged to be able to limit our exposure to high temps and have access to air conditioning and a cold river to jump into. This is not true for the many farmworkers that grow and pick a vast majority of our food here in North America. These farmworkers work through the heat and smoke to keep this country's grocery store shelves full, all while many are forced to live in the shadows and rarely being able to see their families. Please follow the United Farm Workers Union on Instagram to learn more and support legislation to provide a pathway to citizenship for these hardworking people. If there is one thing I have learned over the past decade of farming, it is that climate chaos is here, whether you want to see it or not, and these are some of the people that it impacts the most.

Veggies this week:

Don't sleep on the fennel! This round of fennel is so good, both raw and cooked. Shaved fennel salad is a big favorite in our house.

Beans! Our rainbow "green" beans are back and delicious! We grow a mix of 6 different types, a feast for the palette and the eyes.

The queen of summer crops, the tomato, is really starting to come in, thanks to all of that heat! (see image)

On Farm Pickup people:

We have a new glass door, reach in fridge that we will put your shares in! It is located by the front door, you can't miss it.
