Farm Happenings for November 18, 2021: DOUBLE SHARES THIS WEEK!

Posted on November 15th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Hello! Just a reminder that this week is DOUBLE SHARE WEEK! Due to the holiday next week, we will be distributing both this week and next week's shares this week. We think that people who are cooking might be keen to get their holiday veg earlier and we are unable to distribute at a couple of our locations next week due to closures. If you do not want double shares, please email harvie support at support@harvie.farm

This past week has certainly been wet and windy! We had our first every flood watch at the farm, which was exciting and stressful. The Puyallup has been straightened and diked extensively over the years so we don't often have to worry about annual flooding, but the tremendous amount of rain over the last week caused the river to rise to levels that have not been seen since 1995!

At our farm, the river rose about 15 feet from its normal level and had about 3 feet before it would crest the bank and flood our entire farm. I am definitely grateful that it did not, as we would be unable to harvest or sell any vegetables that are flooded, resulting in thousands of dollars of lost produce (there isn't any crop insurance available to farms like us.) Thinking of all of our farm friends in Snoqualmie, Skagit, Snohomish, and Whatcom that have fields underwater.

Crops of note:

Gilfeather turnips and parsnips are here! If you like a rutabaga, you will like gilfeathers. These are actually the state vegetable of Vermont! Super yummy in a half potato/half gilfeather mash or in Japanese curry. Parsnips are hitting their stride after a couple frosts!

Cauliflower- the last round of cauliflower has suffered some rain damage with the 8 inches of rain that fell on them over the last two weeks. There are a couple very small soft spots that are easy to cut out. We apologize, but would like to offer the "imperfect" produce to you instead of the compost pile. We have both a white and a light green Italian heirloom variety (please eat the leaves!!) this week.

Herbs- its the week for herbs, so we will be harvesting mixed herb bundles of sage, thyme, and rosemary for your holiday cooking needs.

We have a limited amount of eggs this time of year as the chickens lay less with the low light conditions. The chickens need a break too!

We hope everyone has a lovely two weeks and see you again in December!
