Farm Happenings for October 28, 2021

Posted on October 25th, 2021 by Emily Tzeng

Welcome to the first week of our Fall/Winter CSA season!

Thanks to all of our regular season members who are continuing with us and to all of our new members! Even though its fall, we still have lots of good veg out in the field and in our storage barn to share with y'all.

Queen Anne members, I will send a note about this week's deliveries, so be on the lookout.

Last week, we were able to take a bit of a break from harvesting and delivering and were able to get some big projects done on the farm. We are once again expanding the garlic patch this season and were able to plant out some of the garlic before the atmospheric river flowed in last week. If all goes well, we should be harvesting somewhere around 7500 garlic heads next June, which is a lot for a small farm like ours! Another good planting window is coming up next week, so we hope to tuck the rest in by then.

Veg this week:

Celery Root (celeriac)- these gnarly roots are creamy with mild celery flavor when cooked. I might even prefer it to celery?

Cauliflower- fall cauli is the best cauli, and we have a lots to share. This week it will be a combo of sprouting cauliflower (Fioretto), purple and white cauliflower.

Green Tomatoes- LAST CALL for these! Fry them, make salsa verde or chow chow, etc. They will even ripen to red if you keep them in a cool and dark place in a single level. It will be the last fresh tomato from us until next June. We start tomato seeds in February though, so tomato care will be back in our lives in a few months.
