Farm Happenings for third week of September

Posted on September 14th, 2019 by Jenny Jackson

This heat just won't let up! It's been a big challenge to get fall crops established when we continuously have temps in the mid to upper 90s. Carrots need lower temps to germinate well so the ones we seeded several weeks ago will have to be re-seeded, meaning the harvest will be delayed till November on that much anticipated crop. Luckily, our sweet potato harvest is looking good so we should have plenty of those in the meantime.

We've lost a lot of kale and spinach that just burned up in the heat. I've actually not ever seen this happen to kale, as its pretty heat tolerant. We're thankful that Asian greens like bok choy and Napa cabbage are super heat tolerant and they can help fill the gap. Plus, Asian greens are some of the most nutritious! They also have the most anticancer and antioxidant compounds of all the greens out there. So until we can get the cooler weather greens, we hope you enjoy these beauties!
