Planting for Fall

Posted on August 2nd, 2019 by Jenny Jackson

Fall planting used to catch us by surprise, but by now ( this is our 13th season) we are well into the rhythm of the planting cycles for our climate. As the days start to get shorter, the timing of starting fall crops mid to late summer is imperative. Plants growth is dramatically decreased by the shorter days, so we've got to get all those cool weather loving plants started in the hottest part of summer so they have time to produce before winter sets in. Broccoli, chard, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, napa cabbage, kale, and collards have all been seeded in the greenhouse and will be planted out to the field in the coming weeks. Carrots, beets, radishes and turnips won't be far behind.

Most of these crops won't start to produce until late September/early October, so we've got some late summer plantings of lettuce, arugula, tomatoes, green beans, okra, green onions, and peppers to bridge the gap. And of course sweet potatoes will be in the early fall shares.

We're looking forward to growing so many tasty and nutritious crops for you this fall! Thanks for allowing us to be your farmers.
