Growings on 7/29/19

Posted on July 29th, 2019 by Kirsten Simmons

It's been a spreadsheet sort of week.  In part because I needed to take the time to heal after having multiple joints dislocated, and in part because, well, it's time to plan for fall, and that means spending time figuring out what I'm going to grow, how much I want to harvest each week, when it needs to be planted and where it's going to go.  Those decisions play out in a series of spreadsheets in which I try to calculate things like days to maturity when day length is decreasing, yield per square foot, soil amendments needed and when to direct seed, start seedlings and transplant.

Summer has been disappointing, production wise, and that's mostly my fault.  But in the spreadsheets, fall is still unblemished and beautiful.  Seeds are going in on time, I never forget to turn on the irrigation, and my guesses at succession timing are perfect.  No plan survives contact with reality.  But in this moment, the plan sure is pretty!
