Growings On 7/15/19

It's the middle of July, and we'll start seeding out fall crops in the next couple of weeks.

I can't wait.

Not only has it been stupidly humid (I actually broke down and put on shorts for farm work for the first time... ever?), this summer has taught me lots of new ways to fail as a farmer.  I failed to communicate properly with my then business partner back in February, resulting in the loss of our started seedlings.  I failed to maintain the irrigation plan for the purchased replacement seedlings, resulting in further loss.  I failed to properly manage the grant funds that came in this year - even though they showed up late, I failed to make sure I had staff to complete the work that needed to happen.

But the nice thing about farming is that there's always another season.  Instead of chasing tomatoes and peppers that won't produce until the end of the season, I'm focusing on getting fall started on time.  Other farmers who failed in ways different from my failures can help fill out my crops of tomatoes, peppers and eggplant.  And come fall, when my greens and root vegetables are out producing my demand, I can help others in the same way.
