Farm Happenings for the week of August 12, 2023

Posted on August 13th, 2023 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Hi people.  Hope all is well.  Greetings to your family and friends.

The summer days are already getting shorter.  It is already dark about 9pm!   We received a quick deluge of rain Friday night.  Should help the green beans produce lots of beans.  While picking them I noticed lots of tiny beans forming.  This means there will be a second picking.  Don't see much for flowers.  Been so dry.  A third crop is unlikely.  Hope you find lots of recipes for summer squash or zucchini. The drought doesn't seem to be affecting them any.  Some plants have like 50 flowers on.  It is quite the site.  Shread some of that zucchini, bag it and freeze it.  Makes good zucchini bread in the dead of winter!  Sweet corn is doing pretty good as long as you can get water to it.  Sweet corn likes water and heat.  We have plenty of both.

One note on the broccoli and broccolini.  We rinse them with salt water after harvest to cool them down from the heat and rinse out the uninvited green wormies.  We suggest that you give them an additional saltwater bath.  Sometimes they stick on or hatch new babies.  Still rather pick off an occasional "guest" then wonder what killing spray is stuck to my broccoli.

As always have a great week.  You are always welcome to come to the farm for a visit.
