Farm Happenings for December 6, 2023

Posted on December 3rd, 2023 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Hello to our Early Winter Farm Share supporters.  Greetings to all your co-workers, friends and family.  If you still have some outside winter preparations to do, this week sounds like the week to get it done.  Dreary weather isn't very inspirational.  We are happy to have sunny days.  The greens are much happier in the greenhouses.  The dreary landscape is offset when you walk into a green greenhouse.  This winter if you have one of those days where you just can't stand looking at all the white, come for a stroll in one of our greenhouses.

Eating with the seasons is an art in itself.  We have grown accustomed to eating just about any fruit or vegetable all year-around.  Eating with the season isn't just when something is available, but when it is good.  As people we perceive seasons with the weather.  Plants on the other hand experience seasons as day and night.  As a gardener you notice what the day length does in plant growth.  Dew is super important to our crops as well.  Moisture is absorbed through leaves.  Squash and melons need heat to ripen.  If there is no sunshine to dry the dew the fruit doesn't ripen as well.  It is actually quite complicated.

As always have a great week.  Remember, you are always welcome.
