Farm Happenings for December 13, 2023

Posted on December 10th, 2023 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.  Holiday preparations are underway with togetherness and finding joy in passing traditions down to the next generation.  Many times, we find ourselves wanting to skip some of the old traditions.  About that time a memory past comes flooding in from one of our many children, foster children and grandchildren and you remember why all the effort is put forward.  We have found it is not the money spent but the time to share that is the most valuable.  Frosting cookies, polishing the silver, setting up the Winter village and even setting the dinner table in a formal setting along with the hand crocheted nut cups made by great or great-great grandma find their way to memories.  We must never forget the chair that great-great grandpa used to sit at the dinner table on.  it was special because he cut the legs down a few inches so he wouldn't tower over everyone at the table.  He was 6'4" in a time when most barely made it to 5' tall.

This is our last farm share box for the season.  We again thank you for supporting our farm journey for 2023.  You may see a different van pulling up for this delivery.  Ours had some bad luck this past week.  it went into the shop for a new water pump on Monday.  Scheduled repairs are good. During deliveries on Wednesday an inattentive driver (looking at his GPS) smashed into the back of the van.  Crushed his vehicle and smashed the bumper and back doors of the van.  Luckily, we can use the side slider door.  On Friday while Maurice was in a parking lot making a delivery, he noticed a plum of steam.  The new water pump failed.  Still had 10 deliveries.  Maurice found that it pays to be kind to chefs and their helpers.  One such person came to his rescue and helped with deliveries.   Of course, it doesn't end there.  Gail borrowed one of our daughters Jeeps and picked Maurice up on Saturday.  The van was towed to a dealer shop and won't be looked at until Tues.  In the meantime, we will have to drive the 65 miles to Eau Claire to rent a van for the week.  Inconveniences happen to everyone, but ya know we could have done without this one to end the year!

As always have a great week.  Remember, you are always welcome to visit the farm.
