Farm Happenings for August 9, 2023

Posted on August 6th, 2023 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Hello, to everyone.  Greetings to your families and friends.  The heat has been turned up all week here at the farm.  Heat and no rain mean nothing grows.  How sad.  The most amazing crop we have now is all the summer squash and zucchini.  The plants look amazing, and they keep producing like crazy.  We can't figure it out.  Why, we aren't sure.  They must love the heat.  The bees are working the blooms like crazy.  We are offering yellow zucchini, patty pans and squash blossoms this week.  You can try the blooms and feel like you are in one of the local super nice restaurants.

Speaking of bees.  Our beekeeper, Richard at Milk and Honey Acres, has informed us that this season is absolutely great.  The bees are producing honey like crazy.  He has stacked the honey boxes higher than ever seen them.  He has what he calls two yards of bees on our property. The boxes are so heavy with honey they are breaking the pallets they are sitting upon.  Again, he hasn't figured out why this year.  Hot and dry doesn't usually produce this much.  Afraid it might have something to do with the old story....if the hives are extra full, the winter will be tough!  The bees are storing up.  Uggh....that doesn't sound good.

A couple of weeks ago, garlic was happily added.  A close by neighbor called Corner 14 has been learning to raise garlic.  We could see this huge garlic patch from the road and after some inquiries found out that they are raising 10 certified organic varieties.  We hooked up and now can offer delicious garlic.

As always have a great week and come to visit us.  The photo isn't vegetables, but, the tree lilies are so full of flowers that they are bursting with joy.
