Farm Share Week 20 of 20

Posted on October 30th, 2021 by Gail and Maurice Smith

The "Produce Squad" is all dressed up for Halloween in their favorite farm attire.  From the left, we have Myda (the fixer person and outside harvester), Kaylen (greenhouse planter/cutter), Michelle ( greenhouse manager...does everything), Gail (farmer/owner), Jade (farmer's daughter, packer), Ryan (general helper).  Not pictured, Maurice....he off delivering your boxes and Nick (he works on the turkey farm across the road, Michelle's husband, Gail's knight in shining armor because he will leave his other job when we are in distress and need his help).  Happy Halloween!  Be safe and have a little fun.

This is the last week of the Farm Share program.  Leave any extra boxes you might have accumulated at your drop site.  The last one keep and return next year when the program starts up again or enroll in the Early Winter Farm Share that will start the week of 11/7 and run for 6 weeks.

The "Produce Squad" has been harvesting turnips and winter radishes every spare moment of time.  A race to get them out of the ground before they freeze in.  The crop actually looks great.  We don't understand how they can grow in dust, but, certainly are grateful.  All the purple, white and half of the purple top turnips are harvested, washed and boxed for cold storage.  We pull the turnip from the ground, chop the tops off, throw them in a milk crate, place the milk crate on a pallet, tractor the pallet to the wash line, hose them off, dip the crate full of turnips in water, then in another tub of water for sanitation, stack on the pallet, tractor the pallet to the red shed, let dry overnight, box them up, put the pallet in the cooler for storage.  By the end of the day you are cold, wet and exhausted, but, feeling like you accomplished a lot when you see the mountain of gleaming turnips or radishes in the red shed.

We would like to thank all of our customers for supporting DragSmith Farms this 2021 season.  It was unique.  Our worst farming year ever with the drought and labor shortages.  Please keep supporting all your local farmers because they are the ones that will keep food in your belly even in tough times.  Consider enrolling in the Early Winter Farm Share to keep stocked up for the holidays.  Again thanks for the support.
