Farm Share Week 5

Posted on July 18th, 2020 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Look here, I actually caught them willingly out in one of the cabbage patches!  The two "cabbage patch" people are Jade and Kaylen.  Large pig weeds were annoying them while out transplanting a few romaine heads of lettuce in the vacant spots so they did them in.  It was a hot and wet week on the farm.  About 3 inches that we really didn't need.  Big Foot tracks in the spring broccoli seem to appear after we left the field trying to walk with our boots covered in muddy soil.  The humidity challenges us.  We promise to watch out for each other so no one gets heat exhaustion.  If the heat stays with us, we will be starting much earlier in the mornings.

An interesting green to try this week is broccoli leaf.  It is used similar to collard greens or kale.  Super healthy and very tasty.  The recipe is from our friend the wild forager, Alan Bergo.

Mostly it is just too darn hot. Uncomfortable in the fields and greenhouses.  We will continue to do our best to have your box of veggies fresh and in good shape.  It is certainly a challenge!
