Farm Share Week 6

Posted on July 25th, 2020 by Gail and Maurice Smith

Hello everyone.  Hope our note finds you all happy and healthy.  Greetings to your family and friends.  These days are filled with many reminders of how important they are.  The past week found us very busy.  One employee out sick...get better Ken.  One on a mini vacation...it was reported as fun.

Spent many hours in the fields picking veggies, as might be expected.  The above photo made us chuckle....after a few hours of harvesting zucchini and summer squash, it doesn't take much.  Somehow, this guy managed to put on his very own party bow tie.  Harvesting summer squash has many techniques involved.  First of all the leaves and stems are large and very scratchy to the arms and legs.  Most of us need to wear long pants and long sleeved shirts to avoid irritation of the poking.  The extra clothes on a hot summer day is uncomfortable.  Those same leaves scratch the skin on the tender squash. We usually cut the stem with a knife and carefully avoid any contact with the plant on the way to the waiting harvesting container.  If it has rained there is the added chore of wiping the soil off with a rag as well.

Since the fields were to wet for planting or weeding we continued our repair efforts on Greenhouses 3 and 4.  It was exactly a year ago that we were smucked by a tornado.  All 4 of our greenhouse were destroyed. Greenhouses 1 and 2 were repaired before late fall last year. We weeded greenhouse 4. Dry and dusty. It still needs another layer of plastic, water and heat.  Planning on some season extension.  The waterline, gasline and electric lines are being put back up in greenhouse 3.  We extend the season with lettuce heads.

Hope everyone has a busy and productive week....and that the kids can actually go to school soon safely.
