Farm Happenings for May 28, 2019

Posted on May 24th, 2019 by Cathy Shepherd

I overheard a conversation yesterday in the field between two of the girls working here this summer, and it made me laugh. To give you a little background to help understand why I thought it was funny, we have planted over  1,200 tomato plants this year. We spend roughly 3 hours a week tying and pruning them in hopes to increase yields and get them to produce sooner than normal. We have put a ton of man hours into our tomato production this year.

Yesterday, we were planting artichokes in the field and we space these plants pretty far apart (they get really big). Because the work we do is so hard, we try to have a little fun while working, and the girls started tossing the artichoke plugs from a few feet away and try to get them in the holes that we had dug, kinda like basketball but with living plants. As they were working/playing artichoke-ball, I heard another girl say,"don't throw those. If you are going to throw a plant, throw a tomato. Nobody likes those."

Hearing that made me laugh so hard! I know most of you don't see the humor in it, but anybody that has ever grown tomatoes should get a small chuckle out it!
