Farm Happenings for February 6, 2019

Posted on January 31st, 2019 by Cathy Shepherd

Next week ids the biggest seeding week of the year here at Ashbourne. I would say that 40% of all the produce we grown during the spring and summer will be seeded then. We have about 3,000 tomato plants that we plant to out and over 1,000 peppers of various varieties. I had somebody ask me the other day if the spring is an overwhelming time for me. I told him no, that the spring was the most exciting time. Everything is new and and bright green, and you are still well rested from having a slow and laid back winter. It doesn't become overwhelming or exhausting until about Mid June or July, and that is when you start to wish is was October or November. Right now is just such an exciting time for me. I love getting to plan out the year and it is so much fun to look through all of the seed catalogs and pick out all thee fun varieties for the year. Last year, I got super carried away looking at tomato varieties and picked over 14 types, which was way to many and more than we could handle. Being inside our propagation house right now make me so happy! It is a great reminder that no matter how cold it is outside, we will soon be putting young plants in the ground!
